Personal Statement

Research Interests focus on

‘what happens’ in group music therapy with  ‘vulnerable’ persons who may be ill, disabled, disadvantaged or troubled.

1. How participants co-improvise themselves as a collaborative and coordinated ensemble through spontaneous musicing in group music therapy.

2. How spontaneously emerging co-improvised musical structure enables social roles and tasks within and between ‘vulnerable persons’ to be realised as musical actions signal their intention to play with, beside, in contrast and ‘against’ one another. 

Community music therapy as social action and social activism;

1. Creating cooperative social pathways and revised social identities in socially under-resourced places
